The Innovative Concepts Group is carrying out MHD simulations with the code FLASH of Z-pinch fusion schemes in collaboration with private fusion companies. A recent example is simulations of the staged Z-pinch scheme proposed by MIFTI (Magneto-Inertial Fusion Technologies, Inc.) 1. The Z-pinch simulation work has required expanding the capabilities of the FLASH MHD code, such as the treatment of vacuum–plasma interfaces and external circuit models.
