Thomson Scattering Used to Study Thermal Transport Across High Magnetic fields

August 31, 2020
Target shot that shows the long tube of plasma

Recent experiments on the 60-beam OMEGA Laser System employed Thomson scattering to study thermal transport in plasmas where the magnetic field pressure was equal to the thermal pressure. These experiments used the recently commissioned dual magneto-inertial fusion electrical discharge system (MIFEDS). Shown here in an image taken during target shot 97284, the MIFEDs conduction lines extend to the two ten-inch manipulators that deliver the power to the coils that generate the external magnetic field.
