Prof. Valeri Goncharov (research advisor), Theory Division Director

Sam Miller has successfully defended his thesis entitled “Hydrodynamic Instabilities in Inertial Confinement Fusion: Physics, Numerical Methods, and Implementation.” His research highlighted the importance of target defects, both surface and bulk, on inflight shell integrity in inertial confinement fusion implosions. Based on the results of detailed hydrodynamic calculations performed by Sam, future experiments are planned on OMEGA to validate the modeling and to set specifications for target characterization required for high-performing cryogenic designs. Miller has accepted a position as Assistant Scientist at LLE and will be working on code development in the Integrated Modeling Group.
