On 11 April, National Science Foundation (NSF) director, the Honorable Sethuraman “Panch” Panchanathan, visited LLE to learn more about how NSF investments at the University are pushing the frontiers of science. Panchanathan was given a tour of the laboratory by LLE students and staff. “It was just unbelievable watching the amazing ideas, the amazing talent, the amazing impact, the amazing innovation that is coming out through every one of those students, postdocs and faculty members, and researchers,” said Panchanthan. He praised LLE and challenged the lab to continue to increase innovation, engage the whole community, enhance regional impact, and inspire the next generations. “We will take up his challenge and work to meet the goals encapsulated in the UR motto Meliora—ever better,” says LLE Acting Director, Chris Deeney. “The key quote, which carried great impact for us was ‘You are like a mini Bell Labs.’ Considering Bell Labs was an icon for innovation, we were honored by his comment,” says Deeney.
