The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program provides a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to students who intend to pursue research careers in these fields. Cufari developed a passion for plasma theory and nuclear fusion as a high school student while performing research at LLE to develop a theoretical framework for images of charged fusion products. Previous high school program recipients include Alexandra Cok (Stephen Craxton), analytical chemist; Kathryn Knowles (Jacques Delettrez), assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Rochester; Katherine Manfred (Stephen Craxton), atmospheric chemistry research fellow, University of York; Yekaterina Merkulova (Jacques Delettrez), resident physician with an MD/Ph.D. at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and a graduate research assistant with the SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University; and Sapna Ramesh (Kenneth Marshall), NSF graduate research fellow and a Ph.D. candidate in chemical engineering at Northwestern University. More information about the award can be found on the Syracuse University website and the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation website.
