Mapping Liquid Crystal Optics

Steve Jacobs and Brittany Taylor examine a color-coded amplitude map

Steve Jacobs and Brittany Taylor examine a scan of optical rotatory power for a striped distributed polarization rotator (DPR) device made from liquid crystals (LC’s). The 100-mm-diam optic was automatically mapped during a weekend in the UV (at 355 nm) at a 0.5-mm lateral resolution over 68 hours with a Hinds Exicor Mueller Matrix Polarimeter. Older LC DPR device concepts are shown in the foreground.
