The Edward Peck Curtis Awards for graduate student teaching are given to a small number of full-time graduate students who have a role in undergraduate education. LLE graduate student in the Plasma and Ultrafast Laser Science & Engineering Division, Dillon Ramsey, was chosen to receive this award for his exceptional work as a teaching assistant, while also giving back by volunteering in the community. Dillon volunteers at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester where he performs scientific demonstrations for 7–17 year olds and he has taught math at the Groveland Correctional Facility as part of the Rochester Education Justice Initiative. “In my time supervising him, I found him to be one of the most creative, adaptable, compassionate, and fearless educators I have ever met,” says Eitan Freedenberg, the Associate Director of Programming at the Rochester Education Justice Initiative. Dillon will defend his thesis this May and his exceptional community outreach is an inspiration to us all.
