LLE, part of a multi-university team led by Johns Hopkins University, has been awarded an ~$2M, five‑year grant from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA). The LLE research funded by this grant is being led by a team that includes Rick Spielman, Sean Regan, and Cliff Thomas. Experiments funded by the grant are planned on OMEGA and/or OMEGA EP Laser Systems. This grant will fund studies relating to the interaction of intense x rays and laser light with materials as part of a study on the fundamental response of matter to high-intensity, pulsed-radiation sources. We plan to explore material ablation and the generation of thermomechanical shocks. This grant will fund a full-time postdoctoral researcher and a graduate student.
