Four students from Rush-Henrietta Senior High School, seniors Kira Parr (top left), Brian Monclus (top right) and juniors Hezal Kopar (top right) and Bethany Beru (not shown) and their research mentors Ken Marshall (LLE) and Leslie Gregg [Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT)] are shown with the research poster they presented at two recent science competitions: the Terra Rochester Finger Lakes Science and Engineering Fair (TRFSEF) and the NYS Science Technology Entry Program (STEP) state competition. The students won a number of awards at these competitions, including the TRFSEF ASM Materials Education Foundation Award for the most outstanding project in Materials Science (Kira Parr and Brian Monclus), the TRFSEF Grand Award (Hezal Kopar and Bethany Beru), and the TRFSEF Honors Award (Kira Parr and Brian Monclus). Hezal and Bethany were also selected as candidates to submit their research project to the 2019 Regeneron Science Talent Search competition. Brian and Kira presented the poster at the NYS STEP competition, and received grades of “excellent” and “outstanding” for both their oral description and its scientific and technical quality and merit. They were then invited to present the research at the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS) Annual Science Congress in Syracuse, NY this summer. Brian and Kira will be starting undergraduate work this fall at RIT and UR, respectively.
