As part of the LaserNetUS Initiative funded by DOE’s Office of Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) within the Office of Science to provide more access to unique high-intensity laser facilities, scientists from Johns Hopkins University (lead institution), University of Michigan, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and LLE performed the program’s first experiments using the OMEGA EP Laser System on 20 November. In addition to the University of Rochester, accessible facilities include The University of Texas at Austin, The Ohio State University, Colorado State University, University of Michigan, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, SLAC, Berkeley Lab, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Canada’s Advanced Laser Light Source (recently joined). LaserNetUS was established in August 2018 in response to the 2018 National Academies’ Study Report on “Opportunities in intense ultrafast lasers: Reaching for the Brightest Light.” The LLE support team and the visiting experimenters are shown along with an image of the target shot captured inside the chamber in which the experiments took place.
