Alex Chin Wins NNSA Fellowship

June 10, 2019

Pictured is Alex Chin, a graduate of SUNY Geneseo, who is currently enrolled as a Graduate Student in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Rochester. Alex, working with the High-Energy-Density Physics Experiments Group at LLE under the supervision of Rip Collins, Ryan Rygg, and Phil Nilson, has won a National Nuclear Security Administration Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship. These fellowships were established to support the education of doctoral students who study high-energy-density physics, nuclear science, or materials under extreme conditions and hydrodynamics. He is one in only five students in the country to receive the award this year. Alex’s research involves using x-ray absorption spectroscopy to study Earth core materials under extreme conditions, with the hope of gaining insight into the evolution of the Earth and Earth-like planets.
