The Laboratory for Laser Energetics’ (LLE) Cryogenic and Tritium Facility (C&TF) has achieved a remarkable milestone by successfully transferring 51 consecutive cryogenic deuterium–tritium (DT) targets since April 12, 2024. This impressive feat, which was accomplished without any loss of shell integrity, marks a new record for the facility.
The transfer process, known to be the most technically demanding operation at C&TF, requires both precision and careful handling. This achievement is crucial because it increases the number of targets available for cryogenic DT campaigns and enhances the efficiency of the Target Fabrication team in assembling and filling these vital components.
The success of this operation is largely due to the expertise of C&TF operators Steven Verbridge, Douglas Kelley, Brian Surdi, and Michael Koch (Section Leader). Additionally, the Target Fabrication Group, under the leadership of Mark Bonino, has played a key role in producing durable target assemblies that can endure the challenges of the transfer process.
