LLE IN FOCUS

LLE in Focus, LLE’s quarterly magazine, shines the spotlight on the accomplishments, technological advances, and cutting-edge research performed at the Laboratory. Each issue features a specific theme and highlights graduate students, awards and honors, and updates from the facility. Richly illustrated and written in an accessible style, LLE in Focus is designed to engage with a wide audience of people to help explain and promote the important and collaborative work performed by scientists, students, and staff at LLE.

Education Programs

Summer High School Research Program

The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) at the University of Rochester holds an annual summer research program for Rochester-area high school students who have just completed their junior year. The eight-week program provides an exceptional opportunity for highly motivated students to experience scientific research in a realistic environment. Students who are accepted into the program are assigned to a research project and supervised by a staff scientist or engineer at the Laboratory. These projects form an integral part of the research program of the Laboratory and are related to the Laboratory’s 60-beam OMEGA laser, one of the world’s most powerful fusion lasers, and the OMEGA EP laser, completed in 2008.

Broad Exposure to Science and Technology

The BEST Program engages underrepresented Rochester City School District high school students and teachers in the sciences and technologies that support LLE’s research. This broad exposure helps guide students in their pursuit of STEM fields and encourages them to explore STEM careers. Teacher participation equips educators with knowledge and experience that can be added to their curricula.
