Congratulations to LLE scientists whose paper, “Atomic layer deposition of alumina films on reduced-activation ferritic-martensitic steel for nuclear fusion applications” was published in the Journal of Vacuum Science & Technology (JVST) and selected for the October 8, 2026 issue of AIP’s Scilight.

The article highlights the key goals of the paper, where researchers developed a new way to create tritium permeation barriers on RAFM steel substrates using atomic layer deposition (ALD). They achieved permeation reduction by a factor of 35 with a 10nm thick alumina film and changed the limiting step of the process from bulk-limited to surface-limited.
