Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s Ray Smith and Samantha Clarke, along with Kimberly Bolduc, an undergraduate from the University of Massachusetts-Amhurst, measured the crystal structure and density evolution of FeNi at Earth core pressures. These experiments were made possible by combining powder x-ray diffraction image plate (PXRDIP) and active shock breakout (ASBO) instrumentation with high-fidelity laser pulse shaping on OMEGA EP.
