Safety
Strict Compliance Protects People and Systems
At LLE, safety is in our culture—it’s what keeps people protected and research moving forward. Everyone in the lab environment plays a part in ensuring safe work, from following procedures to recognizing potential hazards.
Strict compliance covers every critical area our users might encounter, including:
-
Chemical Safety
-
Electrical Safety
-
Fire Safety
-
Laser Safety
-
Mechanical Safety
-
Radiation Safety
-
Beryllium Safety
-
Environmental, Health, and Safety
These protections are built into daily operations so that hazards are identified early, systems are reviewed before use, and workspaces stay compliant with federal, state, and local regulations. The result is a safe, reliable environment where people can focus on science, technology, and engineering, knowing safeguards are in place.
Safety Training
Access required trainings, complete your qualifications, and ensure you have everything needed to enter and operate within the facility.
Inspections and Reviews
Safety is maintained through ongoing vigilance. Independent readiness reviews, monthly laboratory checks, and rotating walk‑throughs ensure every research space is formally inspected at least once every six months.
Large-scale inspections of the Omega Laser Facility are carefully coordinated to provide thorough oversight while minimizing disruptions to operations. These reviews bring together work area representatives, Safety Officers across multiple disciplines, and University Environmental Health and Safety staff, creating a comprehensive view of both risks and safeguards.
These safeguards exist for a clear purpose: to protect people, preserve research systems, and keep the Omega Laser Facility operating reliably.

Borrowed from the U.S. Navy Nuclear Program
Safe operation of custom laser equipment in all technical areas of the Omega Laser Facility and all laboratory spaces are guided by the operational philosophy adopted from the U.S. Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
The paradigm carefully selects candidates, trains operators for every operation, and qualifies operators through knowledge, practical factors, and watchstander training to operate in strict compliance with approved procedures.
Continuous Improvement
Learning from both incidents and near‑misses is central to LLE’s commitment. Each case is reported, tracked, and analyzed to identify causes and corrective actions. This system ensures that lessons lead directly to improvements in how the laboratory operates, strengthening protections every step of the way.
