Congratulations to LLE scientists Valeri Goncharov, Duc Cao, Tim Collins, and Alexander Shvydky, whose paper “Hot-Spot Pressure Evolution in Inertial Confinement Fusion Implosions” was featured on the cover of the September 2026 issue of Physics of Plasmas.
In an inertial confinement fusion implosion, the pressure in the central hot spot largely determines whether the fuel can reach ignition. The paper examines how mass ablation and radiation losses affect pressure during the deceleration phase, the final stage of the implosion, when the imploding shell slows down and compresses the hot spot.
The team found that material ablated from the shell’s inner surface adds mass to the hot spot and increases its size. As a result, hot-spot pressure rises faster with convergence than would be expected for compression by a rigid piston. Capturing this behavior provides a more reliable basis for scaling target performance to larger, ignition-relevant designs.
