LLE proudly recognizes Marcos Ibáñez Matles for earning the prestigious Fulbright US Student Award! The Fulbright Program places its US Student Award recipients abroad for a year or more to study, conduct research, or teach English, with an emphasis on the cultural exchange that comes from living and working alongside people in the host country.
Marcos will be diving into the two-year program this fall, for the 2026–27 academic year, at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Germany to pursue an MSc in microelectronics and chip design, with a particular interest in specialized chips for high-performance computing, visual computing, graphics, and artificial intelligence.
In recent years, Marcos has made a significant impact at the University of Rochester, working closely with LLE Distinguished Scientist and HED-Theory Group Leader Suxing Hu to develop the adaptive-mesh density-functional theory code meliora. Supported by LLE’s Undergraduate Education Program, his journey included participating in the Summer Undergraduate Program and joining the LLE national laboratories trip in 2025—experiences that deepened his passion for research and advanced scientific computing. Marcos graduated from the University of Rochester this past May with a BS in electrical and computer engineering and a BA in computer science.
Reflecting on Marcos’s contributions, Hu shared, “Marcos contributed significantly to the development of meliora by implementing solution transfer, checkpointing, and restarting capabilities for the code. All of these efforts made me so proud of Marcos!”
