Mechanical Engineering Group Leader

Milton J. Shoup III is the Mechanical Engineering Group leader in the Engineering Division at the University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics. He earned his Bachelor's degree from the University of Rochester. Since joining LLE in 1986 he has developed a high-average and high-peak-power Nd:phosphate-glass slab geometry amplifier, a high-repetition-rate 3-cm clear-aperture Nd:GSGG active mirror, a 24-cm clear-aperture multisegment disk amplifier, and 15- and 20-cm single-segment disk amplifiers. In 1992 Shoup became the laser amplifier subsystem engineer for the OMEGA Upgrade and was responsible for the design, performance, procurement, assembly, and installation of 97 rod and 120 disk amplifiers in the laser system. He also developed the support facilities for the amplifiers, which included de-ionized water and de-ionized water/glycol cooling systems, assembly facilities (clean rooms), and an interferometry facility. In 2001 he returned to a development role for the OMEGA EP laser, where he designed the 40-cm single-segment disk amplifier and plasma-electrode Pockels cell that was an extrapolation of the National Ignition Facility design. In 2002 he became the laser amplifier subsystem engineer for the OMEGA EP laser and was responsible for the design, performance, procurement, assembly, and installation of two rod and 74 disk amplifiers in the laser system. Shoup also developed the support facilities for the amplifiers, which included de-ionized water and de-ionized water and glycol cooling systems and assembly facilities (clean rooms). In 2003 he also became the chief mechanical engineer for the OMEGA EP laser. In this capacity he was involved with the design, performance, procurement, assembly, and installation of all mechanical hardware deployed on the laser system as well as the design and performance of the support facilities, the new laser building, and building infrastructure.
